Senseless tragedy.

I'm pretty sure this will get even less savory as the details of what the hell happened emerge.

Senseless tragedy.

No, its not senseless. It was intended to show the world that Al Qaeda was still a force to reckoned with, as well as to smack the US across the mouth. It was also intended to eliminate a highly competent and intrepid diplomat and terrify his colleagues.

The assault did accomplish most of its goals, all save the "terrify" part, since it will more like just make America and its diplomats angry. But the assault in Benghazi was not 'senseless'. It had a number of purposes and achieved at least some of them.

Which goes back to, no matter how stupidly some moron acted, the use of the movie as an excuse was a cover story, one that plays well to show how they can rally "the faithful" with little effort to provide low risk canon fodder...much like the Taliban and AQ in Afghanistan knowing if women and children are present, the ROE don't let the troops return fire...so they bring human shields to the fight...as did Saddam Hussein in the first Gulf War.

Honestly, in the case of high value targets like an embassy I think we ned to let the troops open fire and then just accept it if they end up killing civilians. Protecting our own diplomats and the information the embassies contain is worth the blowback such casualties cause, IMO.

I fear the DoS and even the White House is beyond reluctant to accept that. If I were an Ambassador, I'd "phone home" and demand USMC staff and right now, in any part of the World, followed by: "and if they aren't here in X hours, you'll have my resignation."

Saw an article the Hillary had declined to place Marines there in Libya/the Middle East countries (as Embassy protection), in a specific policy letter yesterday in digging around the net, something about resources being stretch thin. IMHO, it also has something to do with not "looking aggressive" in parts of the world. While I'll doubt anyone has ever written that, as a Nation, that has become a standard mentality across the board of International Relations. I'd expect it may come out in someone's memoirs a decade from now...
